The word klismos is of Greek origin as is the klismos chair, which is an ancient chair form that was extensively used by the Greeks. It was designed by an unknown designer in the 5th century. It was made for comfort, which can be seen in the way it reclines. If compared to a throne one could say, ” a throne is to rule from and a Klismos is to relax on”. The shape may go even further back in history, and has made several re-appearances, most notably in English Regency and Empire styles.
