There are at least 12 different conifers in this photo! See how different they are in color, form (shape) and texture (the actual needles or leaves). Imagine spacing these evergreens around your property, in small groups with other complimentary shrubs and flowers. Good-bye boring lawn! ~The garden: Conifer Gardens

A mix of shapes, sizes, and colors enlivens a collection of conifers planted as a screen. The bright yellow of a Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Crippsii’ shines in a stand of trees that includes the tall, cylinder-shaped Juniperus scopulorum ‘Skyrocket’ and the conical Alberta spruce (Picea glauca ‘Conica’).

Loropetalum Purple Prince - behind it is nandina (a.k.a. heavenly bamboo or sacred bamboo) - since you want to fill up the space and block the view I don't see any reason to prune. Unpruned shrubs probably have some maximum size but will not be as dense as pruned ones.

Keep Plants Vertical, Not Horizontal - Horizontal space is at a premium in many of the best small backyard ideas. That's why it's good to look for shrubs and trees that max out interest as they grow up, not out. Try dwarf varieties for a small backyard, as well as more columnar evergreens (bonus—they boost wintertime interest, too).:
