ARTIFACT: This is a very rare jacket patch for the United States Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Coastal Patrol Base 17 in Riverhead, New York. The establishment of Coastal Patrol Bases was part of the national response to finding that German saboteurs were successfully landing on US soil: Number 17 was established at Long Island, close to the scene of once such infiltration at Amagansett. Help for New Cadets - Civil Air Patrol
CAP is a nonprofit organization with over 58,000 members. It performs 95% of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and counterdrug missions. Members take a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to the almost 27,000 young people currently participating in CAP cadet programs. CAP has been performing missions for America for more than 60 years.
