the innkeepers movie poster with an evil looking man in front of tombstones and crosses
"The Innkeepers" - While paying homage to the cheesy, low-budget horror movies of the 70's and 80's, director Ti West still delivers a very scary movie that relies more on atmosphere than relentless violence.

Wow, what a crazy movie. One of the most interesting I've seen in a while. While I get basically what happened I'm still not entirely sure what all of it means. The most impressive directorial debut since "Donnie Darko".

The Artist
"The Artist" - I don't know that I would have awarded it Best Picture, but it is a great movie that is both artistically impressive and highly entertaining, despite (or perhaps because of) the near total lack of spoken dialogue.
the poster for melanchoia features a woman in a white dress holding flowers
"Melancholia" - After an opening that is reminiscent of a stroll through an art gallery, this sci-fi tale uses a planet hurtling towards Earth to tell a tale of madness and how it affects the people around it. Another striking work by Lars Von Trier.
I tend to cry pretty easy at movies, and as it turns out I cry even easier at movies involving animals. Gorgeous film that I can't recommend enough. Christian Bale, Jeremy Irvine, Vintage Films, Michael Morpurgo, Horse Movies, Beau Film, Horse Posters, Alfred Hitchcock

A brilliant film. Deserves every Oscar nomination it got.

The Tree of Life (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)
"The Tree of Life" - Terrence Malick's Palme D'Or winning masterpiece is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. Perhaps too slow for some, it is an incredibly moving work that ultimately says that our universe is filled with moments of both happiness and sorrow, but that whichever one you're experiencing, it is still miraculous.
