Austro-Prussian War; a struggle between Austria and Prussia in 1866 for supremacy in Germany. Frequently called tiie Seven Weeks’ War. An 18th century conflict between the Habsburg empire under Maria Theresa and Prussia under Frederick the Great. When Bismarck became Prussian prime minister in 1862, he sought to unify Germany under Prussian supremacy, with the exclusion of Austria.

The Compromise re-established the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Hungary, separate from and no longer subject to the Austrian Empire. Under the Compromise, the lands of the House of Habsburg were reorganized as a real union between the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary.
