Lockwood De Forest was Frederic Church's great nephew and protégé. Church began teaching him to paint in Rome in the winter of 1868. At the same time, Lockwood would tag along with Church on shopping trips to the antiquities markets in Rome helping Church to purchase items to decorate the house at Olana. No doubt this relationship developed Lockwood's eye for beauty and quality and gave him some business sense as well.
