Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, outside of Silver City, is an archaeological site in southwestern New Mexico, in the Gila National Forest. The name Gila is derived from the Yuma Indian term hahquahssael, meaning “salty water running.” The monument lies in rugged country about 30 miles north of Silver City. Inside a Kiva in the Pecos Pueblo, Pecos National Historic Park, New Mexico. Kivas are underground structures - ceremonial and social locations for Puebloan people containing a fire pit, heat deflector, air vent, and what is called a sipapu (a spiritual symbol - not shown here). This Kiva, reconstructed by the National Park, sits atop a bluff near the Pecos Pueblo.
