An Austrian "Volunteer" in the Red Army. Both sides used Central Powers POWS to supplement their manpower. Some of these would have been genuine volunteers, either out of boredom, a desire to fight or for political reasons, but many were ginven the option of starve or enlist. A lack of available uniforms and a desire to retain a national identity meant that many of the volunteers retained much of their German or Austrian uniform.
