This tiny boxwood peapod (10 cm) was carved in c. 1500 by a North German artist. It opens to reveal little peas, and then those peas open to reveal ten little carved scenes from Genesis. Now housed at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin.

Life-size Silver Bull found in a sacred pit near the Stoa of the Athenians. It was made out of silver sheets with some body parts made out of gold. Dates to the middle of the 6th century BCE. Delphi Museum.
At the end of the last glacial two bison were modeled in wet clay in the deep recesses of Le Tuc d'Audoubert cave in SW France. The jaws were expertly traced by the sculptor's fingernail. Rediscovered in 1912, they stood alone in the darkness for 14,000 years.

About 22,000 to 23,000 years ago, an individual, most probably a young woman, undertook two perilous journeys separated by several hours, carrying a toddler at least once. It all happened at Lake Otero, a large Ice Age lake, the shore of which was teeming with wildlife such as mammoths, ground sloths, camels, dire wolves, American lions, and other extinct megafauna. The trail they left behind, located in present-day White Sands National Park in New Mexico, spans 1.5 km and comprises over 400 human footprints, giving the oldest evidence of human presence in the Americas and reshaping our understanding of when the first humans arrived there.

Wisconsin historians recently announced the discovery of at least 11 ancient canoes in a Badger State lake – including one boat that dates back to 2500 BC. The findings were announced in a press release by the Wisconsin Historical Society on May 23. The canoes were found in Lake Mendota, which is located outside of Madison.
