The interior of Iroquois and Huron longhouses were very spacious and ceiling heights tended to be extremely high. This allowed a second "bunk" to be built, that acted like an attic to store foods and materials, as well as give ample space for the interior fires' smoke to rise out of the lower "breathing space."
