ARCHITECTURE: MAUSOLEUM OF GALLA PLACIDA - 425 - 50 A.D. Galla Placidia was daughter to Roman Emperor Theodosius I. Highly important Byzantine mausoleum - exquisitely preserved mosaic art inside. Brick surface so plain in comparison. Building laid out in a cruciform floor plan. Central dome on pendentives (permits placing of circular dome over square room) and barrel vaults over 4 transepts (parts that form arms of cross). Square tower rises above lateral wings. LOCATION: RAVENNA, ITALY

Moses Statue by Michelangelo, Rome, Italy. Located in St. Peters in Chains church. Michelangelo always thought he was liberating a figure from the marble block that was already in it. He certainly did a fabulous job with Moses.
