The village was finally abandoned in the 1500's when the lord of the manor turned out the last few families and knocked down their homes to make way for extra sheep pasturage.

Holyrood Abbey. In 1127 while King David I was hunting in the forests to the east of Edinburgh he was thrown from his horse after it had been startled by a hart. The king was saved from being gored by the charging animal when it was startled either by the miraculous appearance of a holy cross descending from the skies or by sunlight reflected from a crucifix which suddenly appeared between the harts antlers. As an act of thanksgiving David I founded Holyrood Abbeyon the site in 1128.

Goodrich Castle, Herefordshire, England. In existence by 1101, known as Godric’s Castle, named probably after Godric of Mappestone. At the beginning of the 12th century, the castle had passed from Godric to William Fitz Baderon, thought to be his son-in-law, and on to his son, Baderon of Monmouth who married Rohese de Clare, a member of the powerful de Clare family.
