Building My Block, A Project Based Learning Activity (PBL)
There's not a better way to understand the power and importance of a community than taking part in creating one yourself. Towns and cities around the world are filled with incredibly diverse neighborhood blocks --so why don't we let the students design their own? By incorporating geometry, writing, and organizational design skills students can do just that, build their own city block. Building My Block is a project based learning -PBL- activity that asks students to design their own block…
Build a Marble Run with Craft Sticks - Frugal Fun For Boys and Girls
Of all the many marble runs we’ve built over the years, this is our new favorite! Simple materials and sturdy construction make it a WIN for a wide variety of ages. This would be great for a classroom STEM challenge. It all started the other day when we needed a break from homeschooling. It has […]
Build a Simple Electric Motor (Homopolar Motor) - Frugal Fun For Boys and Girls
Learn about electricity with this simple science project for kids – Use a battery, a magnet, and some copper wire to build your own electric motor that really spins! STEM Activity: Holiday Light Circuits | Nitty Gritty Science
Light Circuits: Depending on the grade level of the students, you can have them build a very simple circuit or a very complex circuit with both series and parallel circuits combined. For my students I have them use file folders in order to design and build a series on one side, then a parallel on the other with certain parameters for the switches. The students have an amazing time and there is always 100% participation and together we saved those lights from a trip to the landfill!
Straw Boats: Engineering Challenge Project ~ Great STEM Activity!
Engineering Challenge: Using ten straws, three inches of duct tape, and ten inches of plastic wrap, can you make a boat that can hold 25 pennies without sinking? Materials Needed (per student): 10 straws 10 inches of plastic wrap 3 inch strip of duct tape 25 pennies tub of water This packet con...
Build a Simple Circuit From a Pizza Box (No Soldering)
Build a Simple Circuit From a Pizza Box (No Soldering): I learn best through tactile teaching methods. Teaching and learning basic circuits, electronics, and electricity from books is good, but why not build a simple circuit from scratch and learn from doing. This is a great way to get hands on and tea…
Gamer STEM Challenges! – Student Savvy
Teacher friends, It’s typical for students to begin losing focus in the classroom as the end of the school year is approaching. Real learning does not have to go out the window just yet, you just have to mask it such a way where it doesn’t quite seem like learning to students… but in fact, still is! Do your
Start A Fire
A cool LEGO zip line activity for kids and a great STEM challenge. Perfect boredom buster, screen free activity, or rainy day play. Our LEGO zip line is also a great physics lesson on angles, friction, motion, and force which also uses a simple machine, the pulley!

Rescue Me! A Challenge with Two Teams - Teachers are Terrific
The very first STEM Challenge we tried in fifth grade was a real-life dilemma. My idea was that a student group was camping in a desert and needed to elevate their food while they slept. They could only build the elevation device using the materials in their camping gear. It was fun and certainly a…
Simple Machines and the Rube Goldberg Challenge - Maker Challenge
Students research simple machines and other mechanisms as they learn about and make Rube Goldberg machines. Working in teams, students utilize the engineering design process to design and build their own Rube Goldberg devices with 10 separate steps, including at least six simple machines. In addition to the use of readily available classroom craft supplies, 3D printers may be used (if available) to design and print one or more device mechanisms. Students love this open-ended, team-building…
