Maternity Leave: 2nd Grade

Drawing Notes This is a simple worksheet that I have put in a sheet protector to make it reusable. Students practice drawing notes/rests using a dry erase marker. Color by Note - Hot Air Balloon Another color by note. This includes quarter notes/rests, half notes/rests, and beamed/single eighth notes. You can download a copy of this color by note in the Freebies section of my blog. Music Note Math Another idea I found on O For Tuna, these music note math cards could be used in small groups…

double-sided tone ladders for Apple Tree and Little Leaves The second graders are currently in the land of "do." We've sung and played games, body signed, showed the "low" note by bending or ducking as we sang, echoed patterns while using individual tone ladders, and written do melodies with leaf note heads. staff boards and leaf notes for melodic writing This week I'll present do and the do clef and we'll focus on identifying, reading and writing do songs on the staff. do Songs Apple Tree…

Rhythm Value Cards for Dictation and More - Color In My Piano

Here they are…the rhythm value cards I mentioned in my post yesterday! My favorite part about these cards is that their sizes are appropriate to show the number of beats each kind of note receives. I printed my cards on colored cardstock so they are color-coded: green = 1 beat, pink = 1.5 beats, blue… Continue reading Rhythm Value Cards for Dictation and More

“When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I come to the conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than any talent for abstract, positive thinking.” ~Albert Einstein We began our "Into the Woods" themed week last summer while the girls African cousins came for a visit. The girls along with their cousins were able to create art together that is proudly displayed on the playroom wall. I was very eager to get back into this themed week because I adore this musical and have…

A 'handy' hand staff idea from MyMusicalMagic, my recorder kids had a hard time "visualizing" the "hand staff" maybe if I make this visual aid they'd get it Preschool Music, Music Activities, Teaching Music, Movement Activities, Learning Piano, Physical Activities, Music Lesson Plans, Music Worksheets, Primary Music

The 'Handy, Hands-on' Hand Staff

I love using iconic notation and manipulatives in my music lessons. When exploring pitch patterns (solfege or note addresses), the hand staff is a powerful and ultimately convenient tool. It is always 'at hand' and provides instant 'hands-on' learning experiences. (Pardon the puns; I can't resist!) If the hand staff is a new concept/technique to you, you can adopt it easily and quickly. Simply have students hold their left hands in front of them, palm toward body, and treat their digits as…

Piano Discovery Camp

I thought I would just share a few pictures of Piano Discovery Camp. That camp (and the last of 3) finished up last week. I had 8 campers this time and it was a wonderful group of 7 girls and 1 boy. Although I have a definite plan for each day, I always start out the day with a coloring or craft activity so that kids who come early have something to do until everyone arrives. On this particular day, they were coloring a picture of a little girl playing a piano (part of a nice set of pictures…

Frosty the Snowman

What can I say, I love the holidays and I love that right now, where I am in my curriculum with 3rd, 4th and 5th grades, there are many carols that support the rhythmic concepts that they are practicing. (And I'm lucky that my school population supports the singing of these songs. I feel as a music educator that many of these carols are part of our American Heritage and students should have exposure to singing them. Again, I'm lucky to be in a population that supports them). That being said…
