When houses settle, doors can settle along with them, resulting in misaligned door latches. Solve the problem with a file, a chisel, and a dab of lipstick (any shade will do).
Many door strike plates have an adjustable tab or tang. Some of these tangs can be adjusted in place with a flathead screwdriver. Others need to be removed and adjusted with pliers or an adjustable wrench. The more you bend the tang toward the door, the farther the door has to travel before latching shut.

Since I get asked this question 9,000xs every time I post something Whitewashed , I'm going to make a reference post for you guys ! To get the White Wash finish, I first stain the piece in Dark Walnut (Minwax OR Varathane give same results), I then QUICKLY hand-rub a layer of Minwax White Wash Pickling over that. I do this immediately after I stain, so that the two blend a tad. You have to work so fast, because you put it on so thin, that it dries almost immediately. Practice before you try...
