Imperial Karelian Birch Egg, Russia (1917; made by the House of Fabergé; Karelian birch, gold, sapphire, diamonds). Intended gift of Emperor Nicholas II to mother and Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna. Due to the February Revolution and Nicholas' abdication, Maria Feodorovna never received the Easter egg. It is the only egg that uses an organic material (wood) as it's primary element and is less ornate than previous eggs. This was due to austerity measures brought on by World War I.
