About the Art: Rich hues of sunset reflect off the wet sand in this painting of Monterey, on the California coast. The impasto brush strokes are loose and expressive, capturing the vivacity and movement of the scene. In her style of Open Impressionism, Erin Hanson tries to not overlap her brush strokes when painting, getting each stroke right the first time without blending. This gives her impressionist paintings of sunsets and coastlines a bright and painterly feel, without any muddy colors.
