a piece of paper that has been cut into shapes

There's an imminent new arrival in our extended family, so it's time for me to get working on another version of my baby beach scenes. Simon suggested I incorporate surfing since the father is a keen surfer. That was the starting point for my designing, anyway. I ended up with this row of (potentially surfable?!) waves which will go across the top of the reef/water section, and I started by piecing them. I divided the waves into organic shapes, much like those I used in the much larger…

four different colors of paper laid out on top of each other

I didn’t mean to start a new quilt. But there I was on a video call with Marisa Cummings from Creative Thursday. We were chatting about her Thursday Club - a monthly exploration of the creative act for all of us - and my upcoming class. I can’t even say what was the initial spark, but a quick ske

a blue and white quilt hanging on the side of a tree in front of some rocks

I looked at my list of favorite quilts and my future to-do lists and I realized that most of them are from Elizabeth Hartman. I even own her book which I flip through all the time. I totally fell in love with the New Wave Quilt the first second I saw it. And as soon as I got the Andrea Victoria fabric back in July... I knew that was the projected I wanted to use it for. My plan was to finish this before the weather got warm... sadly it just went into the 70s when I took this picture.. I…

I am glad that I followed my first choice of thread color for quilting. When I look at fabrics I instinctually feel what is right. I see the colors and usually don't think about choices, I just work with what feels good and right for me.I think because I was creating this piece for a tutorial I over thought the color scheme. I spent a morning making a smaller quilt so that I would have a sample to work on with a grey thread when instinctively I had liked and chosen the teal. The grey is a…

an ocean wave is depicted in this artistic painting by quilit illustration, created with acrylic paint and watercolor pencils

This stunning art quilt is titled 'Water is Life, So Why are We Doing This'. It's the work of quilt artist Thom Atkins. Thom created this quilt as a commentary on what we are doing to our oceans. He embellished the wall hanging with distressed plastic, pearls, beads and shells to create something that he felt was both beautiful and terrifying. This piece was machine appliquéd and quilted. See more of Thom's work on his website at http://www.thomatkins.com/
