While each decade is filled with new trends in quilting, the popularity of 1930s quilts and quilt patterns is still going strong almost a century later. Spanning the Great Depression, quilting trends from the 1930s were very much influenced by their time, with quilters favoring scrap quilts over spending money on expensive fabric. Pastel colors were also trending with quilters during this time and many saw the light colors in their quilts as a way to be uplifting during hard times. If you…

I count this as one of my best vintage purchases. It came with a $10 lot of quilting ephemera and was a complete surprise. Here is the introduction to the catalog. In my list of quilt dated during the Civil War I missed this quilt dated 1862 in the collection of Pam Weeks. The red, white and blue quilt was made in Saco, Maine, perhaps to be sent to a soldier's aid society. It's constructed block-by-block, or "Pot-holder Style" in which each block is pieced, quilted and bound and then joined to the other blocks. Pam has studied this New England style of Civil War quilt extensively. A pattern for the Crosses and Losses quilt was published in American…

I don't know why, but generally, the first color I look for in a background fabric is cream or something very neutral. Boring perhaps, but that's just the way it is around here. Then last summer, when we took our trip to Oklahoma, this quilt was the one I dragged around. 4 blocks of Vintage Red done I had lots of opportunity to study it as it was always draped across my lap helping me to endure the freezing cold temps of our vehicle {my husband insists on that}. And you know what? I adore…
