We are learning about the states of matter- solids, liquids, gases…oh my! I absolutely love this unit because there are so many hands-on experiments and activities we use. One of our first experiments demonstrates how air has mass. It is so hard for students to understand that air has weight, or mass! Materials: – a […]

Who doesn’t love seeing how other teachers arrange and organize their classrooms? I’m starting a new series here on the blog which features a a photographic tour of a different classroom each month. I’m kicking off the series with some photos I took in my co-worker’s room: Mrs. Robinson’s second grade in Fort Lauderdale. I’ve … Continued

When I was teaching middle school science, one of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), included understanding the engineering and design process. I decided to create a bulletin board display that would serve as a reference for my students during one of our STEM lessons. My students were designing, constructing, and testing a thermos to determine which structure could hold the most heat. Throughout this lesson, I referenced this bulletin board. Having a visual of the 5 steps of the…

I am thrilled to have *finally* completed my matter unit. No, no...not because I had to completely remake the unit...twice {long story}, but because this unit is probably my best unit yet...if I do say so myself. ;) I love all of the fun that we had during this study, and I {along with my kiddos} am completely obsessed with matter! These experiments are something that they will remember for quite some time! All I have to say to that is PTL...because PASS is just around the corner! Oh dear…

I typed up signs for the key words and definitions the students need to know for our matter unit. In the middle of the board, I displayed student work. The students used Froot Loops to visualize the differences between solids, liquids, and gasses. The background paper is from a roll I bought at the teacher store.
