Have you read the book Snowmen at Night to your class? Snowmen at Night is a great book to use when teaching about predictions. I read this book to my class every January, after winter break. Introducing Snowmen at Night: First I show students the cover of the book and read the title. Then students make predictions about what they think snowmen do at night. In First Grade, we read the book Snowmen at Night and Snowmen at Work. We used our imagination and talked about what our snowmen might be doing at night when we are sleeping and students created their own version using chalk pastel and oil pastel. We also talked about value and shadow. With the moon shining on one side, we noticed a shadow on the other side. We used cool colors to draw a shadow with the chalk pastel. After, we added some "snowflakes" using glitter paper and glue.
