The large intestine joins with the small intestine at the ileocecal sphincter. The colon begins with the cecum which has an appendix branching from it. Then it moves into the ascending colon, then the transverse colon, then the descending colon, and then the sigmoid colon empties into the rectum. The rectum also consists of the anal canal.
