This is an original painting of a shaggy ink cap mushroom hand painted entirely in ink made from the same mushrooms, by me, Abigail Whelan in my studio in Lincolnshire, England. Inkcap mushrooms naturally deliquesce, or melt in to a black liquid as they age, which can be made into ink. I have foraged for the mushrooms from the surrounding countryside and prepared the ink in my studio. It is beautiful ink to work with and perfect for this detailed work.

Last week I spent a few days camping on a woodland site. One of the many magical things I discovered was a small clump of Shaggy Ink Cap mushrooms (Coprinas comatus), which although fairly common, I hadn't seen before (perhaps because they only last a very short time).
