Math Hombre || "Tessellating Kites" Q. Which kites tessellate side-to-side? What do mixed reflection/rotation tessellations look like? A. Double rotation depends on the joint vertices between the two (possibly) different edges. Pick angles so the kites blossom (tessellate around a point) at the vertices between congruent sides. Next... Our study of motions led to one of my favorite topics in all of mathematics: tessellations. I've posted some previous work on this blog, have an old webpage with some good tessellation resources, and found a new source of beautiful Alhambra images to share with students. As a math topic I just love them. The visual aspect, the geometry, the connections with algebra, the historical context, the art connections with Escher... it's darn near perfect. Working with 2nd - 12th graders they are…

In Heesch terminology, there are 2 C(Center Pt Rotation) and 2 G(Glide Reflection) movements. Starting from a square tile, a C movement divides one side in half, with alterations in one half being mirrored in the other. The two instances here are 1) From the tip of the highest ear to the nose, and 2) from the nose to the front of the front foot. This idea comes from Mrs. Kamp at Calver Schools in Baltimore. It takes two projects I have done in the past and blends them together to get one unified, active, interesting artwork: Tessellations and posterized portraits. The images are from her class, (we are going to start ours on Tuesday with tessellations! From Mrs. Kamps website From Mrs. Kamp So this project starts with tessellations. I will teach them about simple translations. (these directions are from Julianna Kunstler. ) here are…
