retractable design wall

We have settled into our place In Key West. We are staying a while, and of course I have certain projects that I need to bring with me. I did bring lots of various cottons to make some scrappy bed quilts. But there are a couple of more serious projects that I want to work on. My dilemma was that our place is mall and there is no place to put up a design wall and I really need that design wall. (Isn't it amazing how spoiled we get?) My hubby was ready to buy some of the sheets of hard foam…

there is a sewing machine on top of the table next to an ironing board

Main - My homemade roll up design wall - I had the shelf already. It was in our dining room of our old house, but it didn't fit in the new so I took it for my sewing room. It was wood colored so I painted it (behr embellished blue is the color). I Love the way it looks now. Anyway, I got a cheap roll up shade and some

a person is holding onto some gray fabric with a barcode on it in front of them

I made a design wall for my sewing room, and I am so happy with how it works! I know there are several design wall ideas out there, some are good for portable projects (think flannel backed tablecloths that can be rolled up and packed away quilt blocks and all). I am working in my temporary sewing room while my new workshop is under construction. This space is small, without a lot of wall space, so I needed a semi-portable design wall that I could move around the room. It also needed to be…

a large poster with the words rtec on it in front of some bookshelves

In our old digs my design wall was limited to ONE. Now with the studio I have my own padded room;) I had one wall space left that I was told needed a bumper to protect the wall from ambitious pressers yielding an iron;) I also had two smaller pieces of cut insulation board that...Read More »

a collage of photos with the words diy quilt design wall

I recently got a bug in my bonnet telling me that I could really use a design wall for my scrappy quilt projects that I love to sort of let come together as I go. In past homes, with large sewing rooms, I just did this kind of thing on the floor, but in my current very small sewing room, I don’t hav

an older woman holding up a large white board

One of the students in last weekend's class brought along her new portable design wall. Liza made it herself using a tri-fold science project board, white flannel on the front side, and red "duct" tape to finish the edges. Talk about simply awesome . . . And what a great example of students teaching their teachers something new. * * * And before you go, I hope you'll take an extra minute or two to check out what one of the women I follow on Instagram just made - click here to visit the BUILD…

a white backdrop is set up in front of a wooden door with black straps on it

I was asked to make some placemats for a friend. She wanted something that looked like Spring/Flowers. I'd seen something online years ago (can't remember where), and decided to do something similar. I made 4 different blocks, using fabrics from the Pioneer Woman collection. Then I cut each block into quarters, and stitched a quarter of each block into a center square block. I then used some of the extra strips I'd cut to make side pieces. placemats I finished 8 of these placemat tops. I…
