Rainbow eucalyptus tree forest

Although they are not native to Hawaii, there are some amazing trees with unbelievable colors scattered throughout the islands. The Big Island has massive groves of eucalyptus trees growing on the Hamakua Coast. In select areas, you may get lucky enough to see a rainbow eucalyptus tree. In this image, I captured a unique perspective of the rainbow eucalyptus with the sun illuminating the scene. The vibrant colors in these trees make them truly unique.

Rainbow Eucalyptus ~ Hana, Maui, Hawaii. The unusual phenomenon is caused by patches of bark shedding at different times. The different colours are therefore indicators of the age of the bark: Freshly shed outer bark will reveal the bright green inner bark. This darkens over time and changes from blue to purple and then reaches orange and maroon tones.

Just noticed that I never made this picture public...no need to comment! Enjoy your weekend, everybody! By the way, this was taken on Maui many years ago. We have eucalyptus trees here on the Sunshine Coast, but not this kind.
