CHATEAU DE LAVARDIN, France: is a ruined castle on a rocky promontory. It was taken by the members of the Catholic League in 1589, then dismantled the following year on the orders of Henri IV of France as part of the demilitarization after the French Wars of Religion. Excavations have shown that part of the site was occupied since protohistory, if not the Neolithic era.
