The idea for “#ThingsThatiHear” arrived when I was visiting a cookware store in Los Angeles. A young woman was looking at her phone and gave a big sigh, turned to her friend decisively and exclaimed, “He wants to go to Bali. But I say Fiji!” I couldn’t help but laugh. The absurdity of this “first world problem” was too much. From that moment on I started to catch all sorts of real-life conversations, that eventually turned into these illustrations.
We definitely think that everyone should be in a long-term relationship because they love their partner. However, we’re not naive to think that things like financial stability don’t matter. Money, drive, and ambition are important… but they can’t be the only reasons you tie the knot with somebody. It can lead to a lot of misery down the road. Though in some cases, the story can take an unexpected turn (with a few twists in between).
Sometimes all it takes is for someone to start the conversation, which the Facebook page Afrocentric Films Collaborative did recently when it posted: “OK black people, ask white people one question you always wanted to know.”
