Krystal Duran on Instagram: "Orchid are epiphytes. They grow on top of other plants and are not anchored in the soil. Epiphytes take up their nutrients from water, air, and debris around them.

Living in Indiana, fall and winter temperatures get less than 55 degrees consistently which would prevent us from being able to anchor orchids or other plants to trees so this will just have to do.

When choosing a board, choose one that is rot resistant. I used cork bark since it doesn’t rot but it’s also very easy to make holes in. It’s fairly plyable.

Hang in a spot that will get light, water the moss when it’s almost dry, and you can incorporate liquid orchid fertilizer in the water when blooms fall off.

Now we can live our orchid hanging dreams… inside 🌸

Pine bark and fir bark are both popular substrates for orchids. They are both lightweight and provide good drainage, but there are some key differences between the two. Pine bark is made from the bark of pine trees and is often sold in bags or pots. It is a popular substrate because it is easy to find and relatively inexpensive. Pine bark also has a high natural pH, which can be beneficial for some orchids. Having the right growing medium for your orchid is vital. While there are several steps to making sure your orchid thrives in your home, intensive care will not make up for using a growing medium that is not suitable for your orchid. Once you have the right growing medium, you can then worry about the more finicky aspects of caring for your orchid—like making sure it gets exactly the right amount of light. Keep reading to find out more about orchid bark mix and how you can make it yourself.
