The Golden orb-weaver spider (Nephila clavipes) is the only species of golden orb-web spider indigenous to continental North & South America. They're harmless and only bite when assaulted. Their bite is milder than a bee sting. The name of the golden silk orb-weavers refers to the color of the spider silk, not the color of the spider itself. Nephila pilipes typically occur in primary and secondary forests, but can also be found in urban areas like gardens. N. pilpies can grow quite large with some females reaching lengths of 30-50 mm, making them one of the bigger spider species.
