On 10 December, the Nobel Prizes are awarded in the Stockholm Concert Hall. The Nobel Prize is widely considered the world’s most prestigious award. It has been given to people and organisations every year since 1901 for achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace. In 1968, Sveriges Riksbank (Sweden's central bank) established the Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize.

1983 Submanyan Chandrasekhar received the Prize for his research “on the structure and evolution of stars”. His work helped us understand how stars age and die. Chandrasekhar calculated what we now call Chandrasekhar limit, which is equal to 1.4 Solar mass. Chandrasekhar showed that if the dying star has a mass of 1.4 Solar mass or less when it reaches the white dwarf stage, it stays a white dwarf forever.

A while back, the BBC’s Future team did the numbers. They looked at all the Nobel prizewinners in all six categories and tried to find the winning formula based on age, birthday, gender, and a number of other criteria including which university they attended.
