The apparent surge is a mystery, but wildlife watchers welcome the spectacle as a possible sign of a rebound in the population that mistakenly gave the Eel River its name.

The Lamprey, which is also sometimes called a lamprey eel is a fish of sorts, which is jawless and has a toothed funnel for a mouth that is built for sucking. The adult lamprey can be as long as nearly four feet. A unique feature of the lamprey is that it has no bone, but a totally cartilage body skeleton.

Lampreys are an order of jawless fish, the adult of which is characterized by a toothed, funnel-like sucking mouth. The common name "lamprey" is probably derived from Latin lampetra, which may mean "stone licker", though the etymology is uncertain.
