Every year, thousands of quilters and quilt lovers descend on Houston, Texas for the International Quilt Festival and Quilt Market. This year, Quilt Festival is from November 2-5, 2023. Many attendees’ favorite part of their annual trip is seeing the Festival Judged Show presented by Quilts, Inc.

This stunning art quilt is titled 'Water is Life, So Why are We Doing This'. It's the work of quilt artist Thom Atkins. Thom created this quilt as a commentary on what we are doing to our oceans. He embellished the wall hanging with distressed plastic, pearls, beads and shells to create something that he felt was both beautiful and terrifying. This piece was machine appliquéd and quilted.
