a little boy that is sitting at a table with some cards in front of him

Sharyn Kish on Instagram: "Here are a few ways to use those mini fly swatters… 1. Teacher (or family member) says a word. Students “swat” the beginning sound heard in the word dictated. (Great phoneme to grapheme practice) The first one to slap it gets to grab it from the table. Play until there are no more cards. 2. some kids are doing their own activities with the words ending sound and pictures on them

Ending sounds. Why do we need to teach them specifically? Ending sounds help strengthen students’ phonological awareness, which is the sound structure of words. This is NORMAL for new readers, but something we can’t ignore, especially when kids are just learning how to read. When books get more complex, without high accuracy in ending sounds, comprehension will inevitably go down.

Kaley Sara on Instagram: "Say “blending” to get the 🔗 to the PERFECT resource to help kids blend sounds together. This is called successive blending - you blend the first two sounds and then add on more sounds as you go. This helps kids: 🩷 blend sounds into words ❤️ not lose their place when they’re reading words 🧡 not make up sounds as they go (“c-a-t” - chips 🤨) 💛 they won’t sound like a robot 🤖 The first method I showed is one that I’ve used for years. However, I’ve found that…

a woman holding up a sign that says, three sounds of ed when? why?

Sher Marshall on Instagram: "🔥 Bet your kids don’t know this! ED as a suffix makes three sounds: d, t and id (or ed, depending on your dialect!). If the base word ends in D or T, it forms its own syllable (fainted, dreaded). The other sounds depend on the sound right before it. 🧰 Try having your kids sort verbs with this ending suffix by the sound it makes. It may help with orthographic mapping. ❓A lot of people will ask if I actually teach kids these things. The answer of course…

a person writing on a white board with colorful streamers around it and the words types of blending

Rianna Le | Australian Primary School Teacher on Instagram: "Blending is easiest when... Words contain or begin with continuant consonants (sounds that can be indefinitely extended) 🗣 These are: f, l, m, n, r, s, v and z. Other consonants (nasal stops or non-continuants🚫) can be a little more tricky for emergent readers to blend as they have an obstruction of the airway which means they essentially ‘stop’ as they’re making the sound 👄 Try it out yourself! Make the /m/ sound vs. the /b…
