Hooded Seals get their name from their unique hooded nasal cavities. They live up to 35 years with a length of 2 to 2.5 metres and a weight of 200 to 300 kg.

In addition, the hooded seal can inflate a large balloon-like sac from one of its nostrils. This is done by shutting one nostril valve and inflating a membrane, which then protrudes from the other nostril
