October 16, 2018, marks the 38th anniversary of World Food Day. World Food Day is a day of action during which people from around the world come together to declare their commitment to eradicating worldwide hunger from our lifetime.

There is a great inequality of life chances that differentiates nations around the world. Measures of well being such as life expectency, infant moraility, access to health and education reveal the outcomes of global inequality. The gap between rich and poor people are greatest in higher poverty nations. The poorest nations suffer with extreme poverty which causes human suffering. This includes violence, poor health, short life expectencty, and unsantiary living conditions.

UN's annual hunger report reveals the extent malnutrition around the global

Poverty in other countries is not comparable to the poverty in the US. As we see in this picture how families have to live in slums and even bathe in dirty water every day of their lives. According to UNICEF more than 22,000 children die from poverty each day. Pictures like these allow people to understand and get a sense of what it is like to truly live in poverty.

I stare at this image a lot. I ask myself how . . . and why . . . and feel so helpless in making a difference. I know a lot of people care. I know a lot more people are living at the door's edge a paycheck away from homelessness on the streets. And that's a scary place to be.
