Market House, Fayetteville, North Carolina, is one of the few American structures which uses the town hall-market scheme found in England. Meat and produce were sold under the open first-floor arcade while town hall meetings were held on the second. The cupola bell still rings 3 times a day. Completed in 1832, it served as a town market until 1906 and town hall until 1907. Slaves were sold there before abolition. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973.
