SIMIEN MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK, Ethiopia: The Ethiopian Highlands is a rugged mass of mountains situated in the Horn region in Northeast Africa. The Highlands were bisected by the Great Rift Valley as the African continental crust pulled apart. This rifting gave rise to large alkaline basalt shield volcanoes beginning about 30 million years ago. The Semien Mountains are part of the Ethiopian Highlands. Simien Mountains National Park includes Ras Dashan, the highest point in Ethiopia.

Increasing temperatures are fostering more favorable conditions for the transmission of malaria into the highlands of Ethiopia, according to a study led by University of Maine associate research professor Bradfield Lyon. Serinus nigriceps, Ethiopian Siskin. An attractive seedeater of the Ethiopian highlands. The distinctive males have a black head and an olive-green and yellow body. Females are duller and heavily streaked, though less so below. Both sexes have a black wing with bold white wingbars. Found in a wide variety of montane habitats including forest edge, grassland, heath, cultivated areas, and areas of human habitation, usually in small flocks. The song is a rapid jumble of twitters and whistles.
