Why is meditation hard? Because previously unnoticed habitual thoughts and emotions distract you from peace and any other goals you expect to get out of meditation. Can it become easy? Yes! You must build your awareness so that you notice when distracting thoughts and emotions arise, and so that you can let them pass without judgement. Over time your neural pathways will change and your identification will shift from thoughts and emotions that arise to the awareness that is aware of them.

The question “why can’t I meditate” is an extremely common one. The answer is often the same: meditation is hard at first for everyone because you can’t stop unwanted thoughts and emotions from distracting the peace or other goals you initially expect from meditation. However, the answer and solution go much deeper than this.
