This really is a great idea.  Using heavier   fabrics is a super idea. Sewing or gluing the seams under should hold up to lots of foot traffic.  But i would think sewing on the fringe would be better than gluing.  Add a carpet pad and you have a nice rug much cheaper than buying one.
