The hypothalamus responds to particular stimuli by releasing corticotropin-release hormone (CRH), which stimulates the anterior pituitary to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). ACTH stimulates the adrenal cortex to release cortisol. Cortisol increases the availability of nutrient molecules to support the response to stress.
