My great-great-grandfather was a Texas Ranger. My father was in the Fish and Wildlife Service - he started out trapping gophers in Marfa and later had jurisdiction over three states. He and my mother moved from El Paso to Sacramento just before I was born, so I grew up in California, later Oregon."

Claudia Alta Taylor, Lady Bird Johnson, about three years old. Though she was named for her mother's brother Claud, during her infancy, her nurse, Alice Tittle, commented, she was as "purty as a ladybird," which is a brightly colored beetle. That nickname virtually replaced her actual first name for the rest of her life. Her father and siblings called her Lady, though her husband called her Bird, which is the name she used on her marriage license.

First Lady Claudia Taylor (Lady Bird) Johnson was born December 1912 in Texas. This year would have marked her birthday. Here she is at 3 years old.
