AMERICAN REVOLUTION: A private soldier of Boucherville's Company of Canadian Volunteers 1777. This was one of several companies of French Canadians who served in Burgoyne's invasion of New York State which culminated in his defeat and surrender at Saratoga. Each of the companies was dressed differently and "volunteers" was possibly an overly optimistic term for their required service.
