The second largest, and most northernmost island of Japan, Hokkaido was settled by the Ainu, who crossed from Russia, 20,000 years ago. Japanese settlers became a problem by 1457 AD, and a war put the Ainu under Japanese authority. The two peoples have remained mostly separate, but the Ainu greatly influenced the Japanese culture, and vice versa. It is a wildly beautiful place, the least developed of the islands, with the harshest weather and most seismic activity.

I love the wild and free look of the young girl. Grandpa has a sword. The integration of the cultures was inevitable, and the approximate form of the Japanese Kimono has already been adopted.
