19th century man in Japan

19th century portrait of an unknown man, by an unknown photographer, Japan

The Kimono Gallery

One woman putting an obi on another. Circa 1876, Japan, by photographer Kozaburo Tamamura.

Pensive Maiko 1920s

This photographic postcard has a wonderful composition and a deft use of light and shadow. The organic form of the tree branch seems to echo the Maiko girl’s posture. Possibly Suzuei (鈴栄) Bell-ring Prosperity, from around 1926, definitely a contemporary of Hatsuko and Hiroko as maiko (apprentice geisha).

Antique Family Album

More pictures scanned from my mother-in-law's photo albums here in Kofu. This group is from my father-in-law's side of the family.

TWO MAIKO ABOUT TO EMBARK ON A SERIOUS BRUNCH in OLD JAPAN

Looking at the the girl on the left, I am impressed by the subtle tones and artistry of the leaves adorning her Kimono. For more on the photographer T. Maiko Chikayuu 1930s

She appears in the 1939 Miyako Odori (Cherry Dance) programme. I like the Itomaki (thread spool) pattern on her naga-juban (inner kimono).

Four late Taishō period (1912-1926) maiko (apprentice geisha) from Kyoto, from left to right: Suzuei, Sanchō, Hiroko and Hastsuko.
