Sealed and Stored

Sealed and Stored Here’s a slick tip to keep partially used caulk tubes well sealed and at hand. Fold a piece of duct tape over the open tube to seal it, leaving a few inches of extra tape. Drive a nail through the tape and hang the tube on pegboard.

Arranging a few old bricks on top of each other makes a simple insect house within minutes. The voids in each layer can be filled with old stems, twigs and other prunings collected from the garden. Bug hotel made from bricks and bamboo - © Lee Avison/GAP

For #handtoolthursday an apparently shop made sander, about the same size as a Jack Plane. Whoever did this went to a lot of trouble. Maybe the guy was trying to build a better mousetrap.

To drill perpendicular holes with a handheld drill, here’s an inexpensive solution. Grab a compact disc (scratched ones that won’t play work just fine for this) and center it on the hole mark. As you drill the hole, watch the reflection in the CD—keep the bit in a straight line with its reflection for a perpendicular hole every time. —Robert Heil, Wheeling, W.Va.
