An armoured jawless fish (a Cephalaspis, which is a kind of osteostracan). This creature evolved as it adapted to the transition from open sea to freshwater conditions in the Ludlow area towards the end of the Silurian. It had not evolved at the time the rocks beneath Whitcliffe were laid down, but fossils of the animal have been found in the younger rocks just to the east, downstream of Ludford Bridge.

Ammonite fossil: These creatures lived between 240 - 65 million years ago, when they became extinct along with the dinosaurs. 'ammonite' (usually lower-case) originates from the Greek Ram-horned god called Ammon. Ammonites belong to a group of predators known as cephalopods, which includes their living relatives the octopus, squid, cuttlefish and nautilus. Ammonites moved by jet propulsion, expelling water through a funnel-like opening to propel themselves in the opposite direction.

"Welcome home to one of the rarest trilobites in the world. Thanks to a gift by Robert Hazen, this fossil of a new Apianurus species is now a part of the Museum's collection. This beautiful fossil was discovered by paleontologist Jake Skabelund in 2011 at the Walcott-Rust Quarry in New York." --Deep Time at the Smithsonian Facebook Page
