Rigel and the Witch Head Nebula

APOD: photo by Farmakopoulos Antonis;  The California Nebula;  Is in the Orion Arm of the Milky Way, as does our Sun, about 1500 ly distance.  Also known as NGC 1499, is an emission nebula;  The bright star to the right is most likely providing the starlight that ionizes much of the nebula's gas; located in Perseus, not far from the Pleiades.
