With his instantly recognizable gravelly voice, Louis Armstrong was also an influential singer, demonstrating great dexterity as an improviser, bending the lyrics and melody of a song for expressive purposes. He was also skilled at scat singing (vocalizing using sounds and syllables instead of actual lyrics).

Louis Armstrong was part of a revolution that occurred during this era known as the Harlem Renaissance. African American individuals began to have deep interest and involvement in music, art, and writing. Louis was a big a part of the music side, as his music is still praised to this day.
