In the medieval period pattens were used as galoshes, with wood soles shaped to match the soles of the shoes they were to be worn with. The patten was shaped to be able to strap over the undershoe and protect it from wear and weather. (this is a detail of Jan van Eyck’s painting Arnolfini Wedding from 1434).
